Major adaptation equipment installed in a client home

Major home adaptations.

The bigger changes that keep your home liveable as your needs change — stairlifts, level-access showers, through-floor lifts, widened doorways, accessible entrances. We handle the funding paperwork and the installation.

An accessible bathroom fitted as part of a major adaptation by WECR

The work that makes a home work again.

When a home starts working against the person living in it — stairs that have become a daily worry, a bathroom that isn’t safe, a front-door step that ends a walk before it begins — the right adaptation puts things back in balance.

Most clients qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant through their council, which can cover the full cost up to the statutory limit. We’ll work out whether you qualify and handle the paperwork.

If any of this sounds familiar, we can help.

01

I'm finding the stairs harder than I used to.

A stairlift can mean the difference between using your whole home and being stuck downstairs. We survey the staircase, recommend the right model, and install — often within a few weeks of DFG approval.

02

My parent had a fall in the bathroom.

A level-access shower, with non-slip flooring and grab rails in the right places, makes washing safe again. We've fitted hundreds of them across the region.

03

My wheelchair won't fit through the doorways.

Widening doorways and removing tight thresholds gives back the run of the house. We'll measure, plan the structural work, and tidy up properly afterwards.

04

Getting in the front door has become the hardest part of the day.

Accessible entrances — ramps, level thresholds, handrails, and where needed a covered porch — turn a barrier back into a doorway.

05

Climbing stairs isn't going to be possible much longer.

A through-floor lift gives access to upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms when a stairlift isn't enough. We design the install around the home — not the other way around.

06

We've been told a DFG might cover this. We don't know where to start.

We do. We work with councils across the region on DFG applications every week. We'll talk you through eligibility, fill in the forms with you, and only proceed once the funding is confirmed.

Major adaptations done well, since 1986.

Most major adaptations are covered in full by the council’s Disabled Facilities Grant. We manage the paperwork, the trades, and the install — and we do this work every week.

More than the equipment.

A major adaptation isn’t just a stairlift or a shower. It’s everything around it — and we don’t leave any of it out.

The things people usually ask first.

If your question isn't here, call us on 0300 323 0700 or email info@wecr.org.uk — we'll answer plainly.

What is a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)?
A DFG is council funding that helps pay for adaptations to make a home accessible — for an older person, a disabled person, or someone whose mobility has changed. It's means-tested for adults, but not for children. We work with DFG teams across the South West. [TBC: confirm current statutory grant cap]
How long does a major adaptation take?
It depends on the work and on how the funding application progresses. A stairlift can sometimes be in within a few weeks of DFG approval. A level-access shower or through-floor lift usually takes longer because of the structural work involved. We'll give you a realistic timeline at the first home visit. [TBC: confirm typical end-to-end timelines]
Do I have to pay anything?
For many clients, the DFG covers the full cost up to the statutory limit. If the work goes over the cap, or if you're not eligible for the grant, we'll quote you transparently before any work starts. [TBC: confirm pricing wording]
Can you do the work in a rented home?
Yes. We work with private landlords, housing associations, and council tenancies. We'll help you get the landlord's permission as part of the process. Many housing providers are very supportive of adaptations that help a tenant stay in their home.
Who chooses the equipment?
You do — with our advice. We don't push particular brands or models. Our caseworker recommends what fits your home, your needs, and the funding available.
Do you remove old equipment when needs change?
Yes — and where possible we refurbish and re-use it for other clients. Nothing useful gets thrown away if we can avoid it.
