WECR team member at work on an outdoor adaptation

Outdoor support.

Garden maintenance, secure boundaries, accessible paths, fencing. The outside of the home matters too — both for getting in and out, and for being able to enjoy it.

Outside matters as much as inside.

An overgrown garden, a broken fence, a path that's become a tripping hazard — the outside of the home can quickly start to feel like another problem. For an older person living alone, it can also become a security worry.

We help with the practical outdoor work that keeps a home safe and usable — clearing and tidying gardens, repairing or replacing fences, laying or levelling paths, and making sure entrances and back doors are secure and accessible.

Some of this work qualifies for DFG or council funding. Some doesn't, in which case we'll quote transparently. [TBC: confirm typical funding routes for outdoor work]

If any of this sounds familiar, we can help.

01

The garden's got away from me.

A one-off clearance to get things back under control — and ongoing maintenance if needed. We don't judge how it got there. We just get it sorted.

02

The path to the front door isn't safe.

Cracked, uneven, or slippery paths get re-laid level. Where steps are a barrier, we look at ramps or step-free access alternatives.

03

The fence is falling down and I don't feel secure.

Replacement fencing, gates that lock properly, and where needed extra security lighting. So you can sleep without worrying about the back garden.

04

My parent's garden is becoming too much for them.

We can take on a tidy-up and put in features that are lower-maintenance — paved areas, raised beds, planting that doesn't need much.

05

I can't get the wheelchair down the path.

Path widening, levelling, and surface replacement to make sure outdoor access matches what's possible indoors.

06

I'd like to sit outside but there's nowhere safe to.

A small paved area with a chair, level access from the back door, and where needed a handrail — turning the garden back into somewhere to spend time.

Outdoor work done by people who know the home matters.

From a one-off garden clearance to a full access path or replacement fence, we send our own trades and stand behind the finish. Where funding applies, we manage the paperwork too.

The outside jobs that keep a home working.

Outdoor support is broad. Here's the kind of work we do most often.

Garden clearance

One-off tidy-ups for overgrown or neglected gardens. Brought back to a state you can manage.

Fencing and gates

Repair and replacement, including secure locking gates and panels.

Paths and surfacing

New paths, levelling existing ones, replacing slippery surfaces with safer materials.

Ramps and step-free entrances

Where the front or back door is becoming a barrier. See also our ramps and step-free access page.

Outdoor handrails

Where steps remain, handrails make them safer to use.

Lower-maintenance gardens

Re-designing gardens so they’re easier to keep on top of — raised beds, paving, simpler planting.

WECR caseworker with a client at home

[TBC: pull a real client testimonial about outdoor work — garden clearance, fencing, or path levelling. Placeholder reads like the kind of thing clients say.] The garden was a mess and I'd been worrying about it for two years. They came in and cleared it in a day, then put in some raised beds I can actually use.

The things people usually ask first.

If your question isn't here, call us on 0300 323 0700 or email info@wecr.org.uk — we'll answer plainly.

Will a DFG pay for outdoor work?
Sometimes — particularly where the work is about access (ramps, paths to and from the home, step-free entrances). General garden maintenance isn't usually grant-funded, but other charitable funding or council programmes can sometimes help. We'll be honest about what we think you'll qualify for. [TBC: confirm funding routes for outdoor work]
Do you do one-off jobs or ongoing maintenance?
Both. Most of our outdoor work is one-off — a clearance, a fence, a path. Some clients then arrange occasional follow-up visits. [TBC: confirm whether ongoing maintenance contracts are offered]
How long does a garden clearance take?
Most clearances are a one- or two-day job, depending on size and what's in there. We'll give you an honest estimate at the visit.
Do you take the rubbish away?
Yes. We dispose of garden waste, removed fencing, and old paving responsibly as part of the job.
Can you do small jobs as well as bigger ones?
Yes. A loose paving slab, a stuck gate, a broken latch — call us and we'll see if it fits into our handy jobs service or whether it needs a fuller visit.
