Helping people stay safe, warm, and independent at home.

For nearly 40 years, We Care Home Improvements has helped older and vulnerable people across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and the wider South West live well in their own homes. From a grab rail to a full bathroom adaptation, from a draught-proofed window to a step-free entrance — we make the changes that make staying home possible.

Practical changes that keep people independent at home.

Major home adaptations

Stairlifts, level-access showers, through-floor lifts, widened doorways. The bigger changes that keep your home liveable as your needs change.

Major adaptations

Bathroom adaptations

Wet rooms, walk-in showers, grab rails, raised toilet seats. Bathrooms designed around how you actually need to use them.

Bathroom adaptations

Kitchen adaptations

Lowered worktops, pull-out shelving, lever taps, accessible appliances. Kitchens that stay usable as mobility changes.

Kitchen adaptations

Ramps & step-free access

Threshold ramps, modular ramp systems, handrails. Getting in and out of your home without the steps becoming a barrier.

Ramp installation

Energy efficiency & warm homes

Insulation, draught-proofing, heating advice. A warm home is a safe home — especially in winter, especially in later life.

Handy jobs & repairs

Small jobs that make a big difference: changing a lightbulb safely, fixing a sticking door, putting up a curtain rail. The kind of help that’s hard to find when you live alone.

The HIA the sector voted best in England.

In 2024, the National Healthy Housing Awards named WECR the best Home Improvement Agency in England. The reason: we don’t just install equipment — we sit down with people, understand what’s actually hard about home, and design solutions that fit the life they want to keep living.

That work is funded in part by councils, the NHS, and grant programmes — so for many of the people we help, our service is free at the point of use.

Placeholder reads like the kind of thing clients say — confirm before use.] They came to look at the bathroom and within a few weeks the whole thing was done. The team were lovely, the work was tidy, and I can finally have a shower without worrying I’m going to fall.

[TBC: real partner quote needed.] We’ve worked with WECR for years on DFG-funded adaptations. They’re responsive, professional, and they understand the difference between a job done and a job done well. We don’t have to chase them — and that matters when you’re managing a caseload.

Real people. Local knowledge. Nearly 40 years of doing this well.

We’re a registered charity and Home Improvement Agency based in the South West. Since 1986, we’ve worked with older adults, disabled people, families, councils, housing associations, and the NHS to make homes work for the people who live in them. Our team of caseworkers, technical officers, and skilled tradespeople know this region — and know how to navigate the funding, the paperwork, and the practicalities.

Meet the team

The things people usually ask first.

If your question isn’t here, call us on 0300 323 0700 or send a message — we’ll answer plainly.

Who is eligible for help from We Care Home Improvements?
We work primarily with older people, disabled people, and people in vulnerable situations across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and the wider South West. If you’re unsure whether we can help in your situation, call us — we’ll tell you straight, and if it’s not us, we’ll often know who can. [TBC: confirm full eligibility wording with WECR]
How much does it cost?
It depends on the work and how it’s funded. For many people we support, council Disabled Facilities Grant funding, NHS partnership funding, or charitable funding covers the cost in full. For others, we’ll quote you transparently before any work starts. [TBC: confirm pricing/funding wording]
How long does it take to get something done?
Small jobs — like a grab rail, a handrail, or a hospital-discharge fast-track adaptation — can often happen within days. Larger adaptations like a level-access shower or stairlift take longer, partly because of grant funding processes. We’ll give you a realistic timeline at first contact, not a marketing one. [TBC: confirm typical turnaround times]
Do I need a referral from a council or hospital?
No. You can come to us directly. We also work with referrals from councils, NHS teams, GPs, social workers, and family members. Whatever route you arrive through, we’ll handle the paperwork and the funding conversation on your behalf.
My parent doesn’t want to ask for help. Can you talk to them?
This comes up often. We’ll come out, have a normal conversation, and listen first — no pressure, no clipboard, no hard sell. A lot of people decide to take the next step once they’ve actually met us. You’re welcome to be there or not, whatever works.
Are you a charity?
Yes — We Care Home Improvements is a registered charity and a recognised Home Improvement Agency. We’re funded through a mix of council contracts, NHS partnerships, grants, and our trading activity. Any surplus goes back into the service. [TBC: charity number]
